Cybersecurity Association of Pennsylvania Responds to Supreme Court’s TikTok Ban Decision

HARRISBURG, PA – The Cybersecurity Association of Pennsylvania (PennCyber) acknowledges the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, effectively banning the Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok in the United States. The decision, aimed at addressing national security concerns, has significant implications for cybersecurity and the privacy of American users.

Scott Davis, Chairman of PennCyber, issued the following statement:
"This ruling highlights the critical importance of user awareness in today’s digital landscape. Users should always be mindful of where and how their online data is stored and used. Any app that transfers user data outside the United States should be scrutinized carefully for potential risks.

The Supreme Court’s decision means TikTok will be removed from Apple and Android app stores, and updates to the app will no longer be available. While existing versions of the app may continue to function temporarily, the absence of updates will leave users exposed to potential data breaches, malware, and other cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

“Outdated and unsupported apps are prime targets for exploitation by malicious actors,” Davis added. “The risks extend far beyond individual users, potentially impacting businesses, schools, and public institutions that rely on secure digital environments.”

While blocking access to the TikTok.com domain entirely may prove challenging due to VPN use and the structure of the internet, PennCyber urges users to exercise caution when engaging with apps that are no longer supported or updated.

This ruling sets a precedent for evaluating foreign-owned technology platforms, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in how user data is managed. PennCyber remains committed to educating users and organizations about best practices for cybersecurity and protecting sensitive information in an increasingly interconnected world.
